How is the root canal treatment done?

At times bacteria attacks the pulp of a tooth, (particularly when a cavity has not been treated for a long time) and causes an infection. In such case, root canal therapy is necessary to save the tooth from further decay. During this procedure, the infected pulp is detached, and the tooth is sealed to prevent relapsing of the infection

  • This is a simple method that we recommend saving the damaged (badly decayed or infected) tooth avoiding the application of dental bridges and implants and try to retain the natural tooth as long as possible.
  • When does the patient need root canal treatment?

This is done when the patient experiences the following types of discomfort in their teeth:

  • Pain during chewing or on application of pressure
  • Prolonged sensitivity of pain to the exposure of hot or cold temperature even after the heating or cooling agent has been removed.
  • Appearance of stain (darkening) or discoloration of teeth occurs
  • Lump formation in the gum (swelling) and softening (forming tender Zone) are on the way in adjacent gum area accompanied by acute pain
  • Presence of loose tooth

How long does the procedure take?

The therapy requires  multiple appointments. On an average, each procedure may take thirty to sixty minutes.

Does the procedure hurt?

An operative procedure may cause some pain to persist after the operation is over, but it soon decreases as the infected pulp which is the cause of the pain has been removed. However, if the pain for some reason intensifies, the doctor may be immediately consulted to take care of the aggravation.

The root canal procedure

Taking a dental x-ray of the affected tooth to assess the extent of the damage and confirm that root canal therapy is the correct procedure to be followed.

  1. Anaesthesia is applied to numb the tooth and the adjacent part of the gum.
  2. A small hole is made on the crown of the tooth to have access to the pulp
  3. Removal of pulp
  4. Cleaning and disinfecting the root canals
  5. Dental filling is done to seal the tooth temporarily to stop re-entry of the bacteria.
  6. Placing a dental crown to protect the tooth and removal of the temporary seal to ensure restoration of the normal bite during eating.

What about persistence of pain after the procedure?

Once the procedure is completed, the patient will no longer suffer from continuous pain and there will be no need to consume the painkillers on regular basis to get relief from pain.

How does the delay in treatment or unawareness about the treatment affect the dental hygiene?

The damage is cumulative and may become serious in that it infects the neighbouring teeth and aggravates pain if the tooth is not treated with the symptoms of discomfort felt in the early stage. The treatment gives a new life to the affected tooth as well as prevents the infection to cause damage to the surrounding teeth.

Can the treated tooth retain the original strength?

No, by natural reason, it can’t do so. The tooth loses its inherent strength because the procedure involves elimination of the pulp and this in turn weakens the tooth compared to its original strength. However, much of the original strength can be retained if procedure involving placing the crown is done within the time suggested by the dental surgeon.
